  • Fall 2024 | Shot Analysis

Pick 10 shots from any animated piece (anime is great for this one - but all 10 need to be from the same movie or series).
    For each shot:
    1. Identify Shot Size
      1. Why did the director choose this size?
    2. Identify Shot Framing
      1. Why did the director choose to frame the shot like this?
    3. Identify Shot Angle
      1. Why did the director choose this angle?
Remember: do not just describe the shot. Tell us why the director chose that shot size. Tell us why the framing was chosen. Tell us why the director chose the shot angle.

Due before the start of class on Tuesday, September 10.

            Nicholas Wolf

            Monogatari Series Shot Analysis (Kizumonogatrai)
            • Shot Size: Medium Full Shot - This is a “Cowboy” shot as Kiss-Shot’s ankles to the top of her head are shown. The director chose this size to show both the relationship between Araragi and Kiss-Shot being that of a vampire servant-vampire master relationship. This is further reinforced by the fact that Araragi’s back faces the darkness, while Kiss-Shot’s back is to the light. Emphasizing the fact that she has more knowledge about being a vampire than Araragi does, being his “light at the end of the tunnel”.
            • Shot Framing: Over-the-Shoulder Shot (OSS) - This is a very wide over-the-shoulder Shot that is used by the director to show the intimate relationship that Kiss-Shot and Araragi share because Araragi sacrificed his humanity to heal Kiss-Shot, bringing them closer together.
            • Shot Angle : Low-Angle Shot (low shot) - This is a low angled shot as to show the power dynamics in Kiss-Shot’s and Araragi’s relationship with each other, and to establish Kiss-Shot as the older and wiser person in the relationship despite appearances, making Kiss-Shot look taller and more responsible.

            • Shot Size: Wide Shot - This is a wide shot as while all three characters are shown in the frame, the distance between them, shows the environment in its entirety, while also showing Oshiro’s emotional distance between Kiss-Shot and Araragi. This shot also highlights the idea that Oshiro is on the side of humans with the light showing his imposing presence even at the back of the classroom. While Araragi and Kiss-Shot are in the darkness as Vampires.
            • Shot Framing: Three Shot - Three characters in the scene with Meme Oshiro standing above both Araragi and Kiss-Shot, showing both his power and authority dwarf both vampires, even if they were to team up.
            • Shot Angle : High Angle (HA) - The high angle denotes Oshiro’s signature look of superiority as he looks down on Kiss-shot and Araragi both showing the power dynamics between the members in the room. Showing Oshiro’s authority, power, knowledge, and skills dwarf Kiss-Shot and Araragi.

            • Shot Size : Wide Shot - The shot being wide allows both the audience to see both the size of the area and the distance of the characters from one another. This shows the separation between Kiss-Shot and Araragi that has occurred, along with the split line implying that a “line has been drawn in the sand” and that there’s no avoiding the conflict from occurring.
            • Shot Framing: Two Shot - The two characters in the scene are not only placed far apart from each other to represent their relationship, but also to show the affection that they had is now very much gone and has now become as small as the characters are in the scene.
            • Shot Angle: eye-level shot/straight-on angle - This eye-level shot shows that Kiss-shot and Araragi are now equal as Araragi has not only embraced his vampiric powers, but also that he no longer looks up to Kiss-Shot, but sees her as what she is, a Bloodsucking vampire that, if left to her own devices would lead to Humanity's extinction from the planet.

            • Shot Size: Close-up shot - This close-up shot shows the anxiousness that Araragi is showing as he has made up his mind; deciding to save and heal Kiss-Shot by giving up his humanity. The director further pushed the scene by not making it clear as to what Araragi is looking at specifically; whether he is steeling his resolve to help Kiss-Shot by looking at her, or at the ground as he is thinking to himself about the monumental decision he is making.
            • Shot Framing: Single Clean Shot - This scene is fully focused on Araragi as he is the final decider on whether or not Kiss-Shot lives or dies. The director makes sure to get a close-up shot of Araragi’s face so that the viewer can see his indecisiveness in whether he is making the right decision or not.
            • Shot Angle: Eye-level shot/ Straight-on angle - The scene is shot from the neck up to emphasize his face in the shot, and how worried he is about the decision that he is about to make.

            • Shot Size: Wide Shot - This Wide shot helps establish the small but authoritative figure in the distance which is Meme Oshiro. It also helps that he is cloaked in shadow, making this character look mysterious as this is his first appearance in the movie.
            • Shot Framing: Single Clean Shot - This scene and shot are both fully focused on Oshiro, as he seems to contrast with the light, making him stick out even more so against the background and machinery.
            • Shot Angle: Hero Shot Angle - The Hero angle that is used to depict Oshiro makes it very clear that he is here to save someone and that he can do so with ease. That relaxed pose contrasts with the knight-like tone that he imposes.

            • Shot Size: Master shot - This master shot shows the trio of our heroes as the scene depicts the power dynamics between the three of them. Oshiro stands in the center, representing his neutral stance in the story and the scene. Araragi and Kiss-Shot sit on opposite ends of the scene, meaning that they most likely are at an impasse on what to do.
            • Shot Framing: Three Shot - The three characters are equally split amongst the scene, showing that all three are equally important to the scene, but that they are not aligned in what they want to do. Oshiro is in the middle representing neutrality, Kiss-Shot on one end representing Vampires, and Araragi on the other side representing Humanity.
            • Shot Angle: eye-level shot/straight-on angle - This shot is done at eye level to represent that at this moment they are all equal and respect the other’s opinion despite age or wisdom. While it is clear none of them share the same opinion or outlook on life, they all seem to respect each other to the point of listening to each other.

            • Shot Size: Extremely Close-Up Shot - This Extremely Close-Up shot shows Araragi's fangs loud and clear to show that he is embracing his Vampiric nature and being aggressive, while also showing him sweating, which could be a sign of nervousness, or tiredness a contrast to this mouth.
            • Shot Framing: Single Clean Shot - The Clean shot of the lower half of Araragi’s Face, while obfuscating what the rest of his body is doing, making the scene an uncertain one.
            • Shot Angle: Low-Angle Shot (low shot) The low-angled shot puts Araragi in a position of superiority and dominance over whatever he seems to be bearing his teeth at.

            • Shot Size: Close-Up Shot - The Close-up shot is used to show Araragi’s full confidence and superiority in the scene, along with his expression showing that he looks down upon whoever he is looking at.
            • Shot Framing: - Single Clean Shot - The clean shot allows the audience to make out and identify Araragis's expression and what he may be thinking at this moment.
            • Shot Angle: Low-Angle Shot (low shot) - The low-angle shot reinforces Araragi’s overly confident attitude, which could be heightened to foreshadow a crushing defeat, or an unexpected Variable that will turn the tide.

            • Shot Size: Medium Close-Up (MCU) - This close up shot both makes the shot close enough that you can see how tightly Araragi’s choking the Vampire Hunter. As well as how out of it his expression is as he is confronted by Oshiro on why he shouldn’t become a murderer thus the expression on his face.
            • Shot Framing: Point of View Shot (POV) - Though it isn’t evident the shot is done from the POV of Oshiro as he is convincing Araragi that he does not want to become a murderer. Especially since Hanekawa, Araragi’s first friend who was mortally wounded by the Vampire Hunter, is not dead yet so if he goes now he can go heal her and save her with his new vampire blood.
            • Shot Angle: High Angle (HA) - The High Angle was used effectively in showing Araragi in his lowest point in the story, as well as emphasizing that Oshiro is the authority figure that Araragi respects and looks up to. It's also done to show that while Araragi is more powerful than the Hunter, Oshiro is more powerful than Araragi.

            • Shot Size: Wide Shot - This Shot emphasized how truely lonely Araragi is as, besides Hanekawa, he has no real friends outside of Kiss-Shot and Oshiro who are more mentor figures to him than anything. Although the environment seems cloudy which could be a reflection of Araragi’s mental state, bright but with a cloudy forecast.
            • Shot Framing: Single Clean Shot - While the shot isn’t the cleanest, Araragi stands out in the scene with both his pose reflecting his thoughts. The building in the background also allows for a reflection of how insignificant Araragi is in the overall story, but also how he also is very important as he’s the only one who can do it.
            • Shot Angle: eye-level shot/straight-on angle - The eye leveled scene also grounds the viewer as Araragi questions his goal of hunting down Kiss-Shots missing body parts, and also allows him to reevaluate his priorities.

Shot: closeup, because we are looking at the night guard only showing his shoulders up and also looking at the paper to find out why he's here to give us the idea that he is our main protagonist (but not actually)
Angle: high angle because we only see the very top part of his body on the side of his face to get up close and personal with him at a greater detail
Frame: over the shoulder it focus's on the night guard only
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_184034074.png Views:	0 Size:	263.9 KB ID:	2826
establishing shot, because this is the very first scene in the short and it establishes the world around the area in a city during a rainy night during the closing time at the pizzaria to give people the idea of what they are in for.
clean clear shot: because the car is the only 'thing' in this short that's availible to us right noe meaning that someone is going to walk out and become a prominent character.
eye level: this mainly for like anybody can look at if you were in the exact location
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_184132196.png Views:	0 Size:	464.1 KB ID:	2827
Shot: wide shot because it has the first main characters that are going to be in this short on their stage meaning that they live together and with their own personailties just by them being shutdown.
angle: ground level because it shows us from the ground to the ceiling their main domain of where they live in and what kind of enviornment they're in
frame: three shot because it shows the full body shots of the main three animatronics standing in different straight poses
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_191316088.png Views:	0 Size:	486.8 KB ID:	2828
extreme close up shot: it's to show how freddy wakes up for his night, that he is just getting powered on and you get to see how he gets powered on and see the programming in great detail.
eye level: this is only the first up close shot to the character so one is judging him at all until we find out more about him. we also see the kind of eyes he has for those animation geeks who possibly wants to have this as reference for their own things.
single: it only shows one character also to show who is the number one in the crew.4
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_194835346.png Views:	0 Size:	207.9 KB ID:	2829
two shot because it shows the iconic duo from the series and shows them to be scary meaning we should be scared of them cause they could hurt us.
over shoulder level: bonnie is seen with his top half of his body with foxy being seen with only his head
medium shot: because it shows them walking together and to show that they have a mission to go on to do said mission

Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_202215561.png Views:	0 Size:	351.0 KB ID:	2830
high angle: because its above his head to show his hook transformation is complete and he has solved his problem of having no hand
single shot: because he is the one character that's the main focus
high close up: because from higher up the sun is u[ meaning he is happy about the mission he completed
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_202330182.png Views:	0 Size:	309.2 KB ID:	2831
point of view: because its to show a montage of foxy getting the parts he needs to make his look as we look into his eyes of what he's doing
extreme close up: because we see his hand and arm close together which brings into the pov shot
single frame:because it shows only one character doing something to show he is the main focus
Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_203446762.png Views:	0 Size:	619.9 KB ID:	2832
three shot: it shows three characters to show they are the ones having a conversation with each about foxy new hook
wide shot: because it shows a new enviornment with the bonnie, chica, and foxy which is the kitchen with a kitchen door and a stove
"cowboy shot": granted it does have more than one character but it shows that foxy is having a moment of glory and happiness with not only his new hook but his new name 'pirate foxy'

close up shot: it's shot up to freddys chest up to his head, because it shows that he is questioning foxy with an 'over it' look on his face but also question about his accent if foxy's a pirate now
single shot: since freddy is close up he is the character we should focus cause he is the one talking first before anyone else
over the shoulder: freddy is the one at the main center stage at the moment cause he is the one talking

Click image for larger version Name:	image_2024-09-09_204752700.png Views:	0 Size:	215.2 KB ID:	2834
single frame: freddy is the main character he focus on cause he had food thrown at him
medium close up shot: he is showing anger close up cause he had about enough of foxy and him fighting, cause he is showing actual anger and the background is red which are signs of annger
shoulder level: we see over his shoulder for a smaller bit of personal closeness for the character.

                          Shot Size: Medium Shot
Reason for Size: This size captures both characters and their environment, allowing viewers to see their expressions while also understanding the setting's significance.
Framing: The characters are positioned off-center, creating a sense of dynamics and drawing attention to the background, which is integral to the story.
                          Angle: Eye Level
Reason for Angle: An eye-level angle establishes a neutral perspective, making the emotional connection between characters feel relatable and grounded.

                            • Medium Close-Up: This is a close-up because, to focus more on BoJack, the director used this shot to show BoJack's face fully, letting us see the emotion at this moment.
                            • Single Framing: They used a single shot, to show off how isolated the scene is.
                            • High Angle: The director used the High Angle to show how small this character feels in the moment, showing how he's not in power at this moment either.

                            • Medium Shot: This is a medium shot, because you can still see some of the character's upper body, and it gives him a sense of loneliness based on how the scene is set up
                            • Single(clean): BoJack is the only noticeable character in this scene not counting the person on the phone.
                            • Eye Level: This shot is eye level because of how it's set up the audience can engage with everything happening around BoJack while he remains in the middle.

                            • Wide Shot: You can focus on all the characters but also see their environment, showing off the relationship between BoJack and his mother.
                            • Single Shot (Dirty): I wouldn’t call this a crowd shot due to it only having three people in the scene So it’s a dirty single shot the three people in the scene
                            • Eye Level: I would say this angle is eye level because it is like we standing on the stage watching them interact with each other

                            • Medium Full Shot: This one is because each other is in good interaction range with each other almost set up like they're on a sitcom
                            • Crowd Shot: This shot I would call a crowd shot due to being able to see everyone in this one, facial expressions and all.
                            • Eye Level: This one is at eye level because it is almost like we are watching from a sitcom audience point of view

                            • Medium Shot: This shot is wide enough were we can see all the characters in the scene and have a good description of each in this scene
                            • Over the Shoulder: Due to the camera being placed in between Cracker Jack and Beatrice his mom, as we are looking over their shoulder to view what the people across from them are doing.
                            • Shoulder Level" insert shot": I believe the camera is placed at this angle so we can see what the characters are doing in this scene

                            • Medium Close-Up: It is a medium close-up since we are not able to see the lower body and a lot more of the upper body and facial expressions
                            • Two Shot: This is cause it shows two people in the scene but also you can tell their relationship by the distance they keep from each other.
                            • Eye Level: This shot is level because it is like we are in the room watching them have this very deep conversation

                            • Wide Shot- The wide shot, full shows us the environment around BoJack, the almost empty he is surrounded by and it gives more emphasis on how he might be feeling in this scene.
                            • Single Frame- a single frame shot, because we are only able to see Bojack in the moment.
                            • Low Angle- The camera is pointed up from a low angle to show how deep the hole is and also show how BoJack might be feeling weak at this moment

                            • Master shot - a master shot because we can see everyone and everything in this shot, confirming the relocation and all relationships with the character in the scene.
                            • Crowd- This scene is full of people who play a mass important, even though we can't see everyone's face we can see that they are there.
                            • High Angle- I feellike this shot is a high angle, a slightly high angle, because everything isn't centered but doesn't feel at eye level either, almost feels like they're being watched for an angle in a sense.

                            • Close Up- A close up was used for this shot to show the emotion BoJack was feeling in this moment giving us a feel for his confusion and worry.
                            • Single (dirty) - though Bojack is the main fouces in this scene there are still people in the background of the scene, which makes it feel like a dirty single to me.
                            • Eye Level- The camera sits almost eye level with Bojack, allowing us to almost feel the emotions he going through.

                            • Close Up- This shot is close because we are still able to make out his facial expression even thought it is from a side angle.
                            • Over the Shoulder- This shot is made over his shoulder but also looking up like we are noticing what he looking at at the same time as him.
                            • Low Angle- The low angle is used at this moment to almost make us feel small with Bojack, being able to see what he sees and the same amount of worry as him.
