  • Spring 2025 | NERF Gun: WIP 01_Block In

    Due before class (6:00pm): (03/17/25)

A "Work in Progress" (WIP) assignment in digital sculpting refers to an intermediate stage of a sculpting project where you present your ongoing work before reaching the final completed piece.

In a WIP assignment, you are required to share your progress, demonstrate your sculpting skills, and receive feedback from your instructors or peers to refine your work further.

This WIP serves as a foundational step in the asset creation process designed to assess your ability to accurately translate 2D concept art into 3D form through what we refer to as the Block-in process.

You will focus on creating all BASE GEOMETRY and form for the NERF Gun represented in the 2D concept art while maintaining alignment with proportions, silhouette, and overall aesthetic. NERF Guns can be composed of several parts, study and consider how to break those down from your reference. Minimally, these Primary Shapes are what I am looking for. Remember, that the next deliverable is a refinement of these shapes. So, I will always encourage working on and constantly progressing your projects until the Final is DUE. Extra time now on one single subtool, is one less thing you have to work on for the next deliverable. Always, think ahead and have a plan.

Include your name in the post!

Answer these questions: 1. Did you take any time to research and learn more about ZModeler? 2. If so, what is something you learned about ZModeler that I have not yet covered in class or that you want me to cover more in class?

    Deliverables:
    • An Image of your 2D Concept Art Reference (.png)
    • Turnaround Renders:
      • You are uploading your compiled Photoshop renders utilizing BPR from ZBrush posted directly inline of your UIW3D Forums post. (.png)
      • Minimum Views (Front, ¾ front, Side, ¾ Back views)

    1. I did try to research more about ZModeler through online tutorials and well as consulting the campus ANGD tutors.
    2. I believe I ended up learning a different way of shaping the gun through adding more geometry via polyloops and extruding polygons that was not quite what you demonstrated, but it got the job done, nonetheless.

I did do my research of z-modeler, as well as doing some troubleshooting for issues I had with inserting the image on the plane without causing distortion. Although, there is nothing I really learned that was not covered in class. All my research was either a refresher, add-on, or a fill in the blank for gaps in my notes.

        1. Yes, I have earlier within the semester, however it was a brief introduction to ZModeler
        2. I've learned about the crease as well as some of the basics.

No, I did not research more about Z-modeler, I understood what was covered in class and did not see it necessary while working on the block-out. If need be I'll do my research.

1.) I did some research and also messing around with z-modeler on my own, testing out different ways to work with it. I also got some help from friends or upperclassmen with it
2.) I think you're going to go over the boolens and bevels soon, and the other details

I watched a couple of YouTube videos that goes over the basics of using Z modeler, and I Followed the notes on teams as well. I only know the basics so far, and If I need to Ill likely do more research on the tool.

                1. I had to do some research on how to do the basics of ZModeler off of YouTube because of me falling sick last class we had.

                2. Because I missed the last class, I got to learn the basics on my own. I'm afraid I'm going to be behind, but I'm going to try my best to catch up.

                    1. I looked up ZModeler to refresh myself on how things work and how to use it, however I didn't do much more besides the basics we learned during our previous class.

                        1. I got practice using Zmodeler over the break and I got some assistance from friends. 2. I would like you to spend more time talking about QMesh, Slide, and Swivel.

                          1. I have experimented with ways to poly group and have some experience with zmodeler from the last projects, but not too beyond the scope you showed in class.
                          2. I'd like help with ways you'd go around modeling the middle of my gun. All the separate parts and difference in depth is a bit intimidating.
