Assignment: On THIS THREAD by Wednesday at NOON

Please post a static but two dimensional work of art that you like and post the name of the artist, the title of the artwork, and a sentence (or two or three) describing why you like it. It can be anything like a painting, a photo, a book or album cover, or a poster, but no stills from a movie or TV show. Do not use Chat GPT to come up with your sentence because come on really

    Example:

This is from a comic book called Hellboy: The Wolves of St Auguste, drawn by Mike Mignola
I like it because, even though it's almost completely obscured by shadow it's just so badass and brutal, and clever with showing what's going on, like the cross is hot and leaving the burn marks on the werewolf, like how cool is that

I saw this painting at the National Gallery of Art is Washington DC. It is an oil painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry. It’s called “Misse and Luttine” and was painted in 1729. I like it because it has cute dogs and I like how he painted their names onto it so you know the dog’s names and which one is which. I like that he did that because I feel like the painting now encapsulates his love for those dogs forever even though they haven’t been around for a long time they are still alive in this painting.

This cover is from a book called "One Dark Window", written by Rachel Gillig. I like it because due to it mainly being covered in shadows, it really gives you an eerie tone which is what I like to read in my books. I also really love all of the leaves and forests details, it really grabs your attention along with giving you a hint that the story has a forest setting. The misty smoke which is coming from the girl is also a really cool detail because it gives off the impression that the girl is possessed, and she can viewed through a mirror like shape in the book cover which is a nice touch of detail due to the title of the book.

This painting is by Caspar David Friedrich, titled Wanderer above the sea of fog and has really stuck out to me personally compared to other paintings and works of art. Just with the style chosen, it is unique in its portrayal, feeling real yet artistic, along with the color choice and fading giving a tone to the painting. My favorite part is the portrayal of the man taking center stage, and while his face remains hidden and cannot be seen, it speaks so much more than I feel as if you could, as a face is not needed to feel and relate to someone, rather actions speak louder than words, his body language for example. In the painting he is relaxed yet fixated, clearing in thought while looking out at the endless fog, which can be interpreted in many ways to different people, even if it may be different than the original intent by the artist, the point is that it feels relatable because people have moments where we take time to reflect and to just think, which this painting represents best.

I like this art because of the innocent look depicted on her face and the color scheme. I like how she has this innocent sweet expression and transforms into a soldier of war with her hair flowing around her like a flag. I like the art style as well. I've watched this artist grow and this art piece stuck with me despite it being one of their older works because of how they were able to capture the characters expression.

Painted by Barnett Newman between 1966 and 1970, 'Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow and Blue' is a series of four pieces that comes to the front of my mind whenever the subject of museum art comes up due to its history and controversy. This exact photo of it, the third iteration in the series, is after it was defaced in 1986 due to unrest over its simplistic nature on the surface. I think this photo especially sticks in my memory because of the way the tears in the canvas expose the wall behind it, breaking up the sea of red in the middle, creating visual discord in the piece. It's particularly interesting in this way, because I think it accomplishes the exact opposite of its intent— the exposed white behind the canvas serves to make the flat red more visually interesting, as the vandalism on the piece intended to destroy it only made it even more of a subject of discussion amongst art critics.

This oil painting by Pablo Picasso in 1937 is called Guernica. This painting has always caught my eye since I saw it in elementary school because of the meaning behind why he painted it and what the painting itself captures. Picasso painted this as a response to the World War II bombing of the city Guernica, which is where this painting gets in name from. It captures the chaos and aftermath of the bombing and how the war and terror were affecting everyone around the world at this time, hoping that there would be an end to it soon.

“Spider-man in the Rain” by John Romita Sr.
I think it’s an overall really cool piece, it shows the gargoyle like posing of spider-man that we often see, combined with the extreme shadows that make the red and blue pop. It shows the spirit to keep going even if the situation around you sucks, seen by the rain. It really embodies who Spider-man is and what he represents as a hero.

This is a album cover for Cillide with the sky from Pierce the Veil a American rock band with their music of genres of pop punk, post hardcore and experimental rock. The band form in 2006 and still active to this day!! The inspiration of the Ablum cover was from Daniel Danger.

I end up picking this album cover due to being one of the first songs I ever listened to when I discovered the band as well how cool the cover looks!! The colors of blends of Green and blue with black and brown creating a rough texture to the cover and how the house is decaying, breaking down and women floating above it all with cloudy blue sky behind her! I overall enjoy the rough look with the colors as if it a painting and the artist behind the cover took a paint brush and not smoothing out the rough edges of the colors layering on top of each other. I think it really cool and one of my favorite album.

This piece is called Sunset at Shinnecock Hills made by William Merritt Chase in 1985. I found this work when visiting the San Antonio Museum of Art back in August of last year when my partner was in town. The warm colors evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia, and it's just overall a really neat piece!! And also the grass in it looks soft, that's peak. Click image for larger version

This painting is Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya; it follows the story of the Titan Cronus eating his children in response to a prophecy of him being overthrown by one of them. I adore this piece for both how utterly terrifying it is and its history. Goya painted this and 13 other unnamed paintings on the walls of his home; it wasn’t until he died that it was discovered, named, and shown to the public. After I first saw this painting it’s all i could think about for a whole week, how haunting and scary it was genuinely gave me goosebumps. Theres a certain crazed look in Saturn’s(Cronus) eyes combined with the inky darkness that surrounds the figures that draws me in and makes it hard to look away no matter how much it terrifies me. I also find the fact that the piece was censored in its restoration/transfer process interesting, I cant help but wonder and envision how much more evocative the painting would be if all the original details were present.

This is a panel form the manga Dungeon Meshi by Ryoko Kui. I really like the way it's drawn and presented. It's the first time we get to see the full body of what one of the characters had turn into and composition of it just makes her feel like a threat. The tiny details of the scales and slight shadow around the dragon part of the body comaped to how simple the human half is gives a feeling like somethings off, that this person infront of you is more monster like then before.

this is from a manga found on twitter called the guy I'm interested in wasn't a guy at all. this is one of the full art covers done for the manga and it's one of my favorites, the triangle composition makes the characters the focus of the whole drawing. the overhead lighting adding the focus and the poses of the characters can tell us a bit about their personality.

I enjoy this poster because the lone egg sitting in the empty black space perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being alone in an eerie setting. The color scheme gives off a nice disgusting, yet classic sci-fi horror vibe. The poster has text that reads, "in space no one can hear you scream," which adds context to the setting of the poster, yet it isn't needed to get the feeling that something dreadful/creepy/disgusting is going on. When you visualize yourself as the egg, the poster does a really good job at making you feel alone, secluded from the normalcy of humanity and the comfort of any objects around you. It's just you, and the vast, empty, black abyss standing between you and anything recognizable. If you scream no one will hear you. No one will save you. Nothing you gaze upon will ever welcome you. You're all alone in this empty space while the feeling of dread washes over your body like a tidal wave. You know something will happen, yet you do not know what to expect of your situation. All you can tell is that it does not welcome you.

This painting is called "Pinched with Four Aces" by Cassius Coolidge, and belongs to a series of 16 other similar paintings appropriately called "Dogs Playing Poker". I love this one in particular because of the guilt shown on the dog closest to the front and the absurdity of a bunch of police dogs busting an illegal dog gambling ring.
