In this corner of the world
Act 1 “Set Up”
Suzu Urano (Protagonist) starts living with her newly wedded husband, Shusaku's family, which sets the initial tone of the story as that of a romance story. While in the background is the later period of the Pacific war of World War 2 in 1943.
This is the inciting incident as her marriage moves her out of her hometown of Eba that is near Hiroshima, and into Kure a port city that is far away from Hiroshima, but since there is a naval port near the town Suzu's family suffers though constant air raids by the Americans.
Act 2 “The Confrontation”
Though there is not much fun and games due to the constant threat due to the American firebombing and regular bombing of the port. Suzu's family makes due with what they have and connects and bonds with one another.
However In 1945, the United States began to bomb Japan with timed bombs, leading to Suzu losing both her right hand, and her niece, Harumi in the process. This is the midpoint of the story and the Dark Night of the soul as Keiko, Harumi’s mother blames Suzu for Harumi’s death, worsening her condition.
Act 3 “The Climax”
The twist of the movie comes from the fact that Suzu and her family fully believed that they were going to fight the Americans to the bitter end, however not only did this not happen. The Japanese Emperor himself radioed the citizens telling them that they were uncondionally surrendering to the Americans even though they had not even stepped foot on the Island. Causing Suzu and Keiko to break down as they blamed the Americans for Harumi's death.
After the Japanese Surrender to the Americans, American troops soon set up soup kitchens in Kure, providing food to the locals and Suzu. Suzu, having learned of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, goes to Kusatsu, the town where her parents and sister were to learn if they were still alive. She learns that her mother was caught outside during the bomb and that her father passed from radiation sickness months after the fact, and it is likely the same case with Suzu’s sister Sumi. This arc of the story reflects the climax as Suzu is forced to accept the losses of war; her home, her family, and of her body, and from there start anew.
Suzu and Shusaku are reunited after the IJN was disbanded after American occupation. They then greeted by a homeless child who was made homeless and alone after the war, so they both decide to adopt and take care of her ending the movie on a note that Japan will rebuild, and there will be the next generation.
