  • Emily's Project Proposal #2-Joust

I wanted to recreate some Gameplay from Joust in 3D. It was an arcade game developed by Williams Electronics and released in arcades in 1982. It's also a longtime favorite game of my family's, so much so that my dad actually has the original arcade game! The two main characters that players use are two knights riding mounts (an ostrich and a stork) that try to defeat enemy knights on buzzards. They can defeat enemies or be defeated by landing on top of them. The point system is through gathering eggs that the buzzards leave behind. I've included some video of gameplay (Just be aware that the sound effects can be loud!) The clip is from this playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8kVRLUT6WA

Got into some two player sessions of Joust recently. Fun as ever, frantically trying to avoid being squashed out by the CPU ostrich-knights in this arcade gem. Trying to avoid killing the other player to try and get further in the game, is a big part of the challenge when playing two player. Being overly cautious will often get you killed, so ...

For my proposal, I would like to recreate about 12 seconds of gameplay. The animation of the two main characters would be the same (Walk/Run/Fly/Drift/Jump) and use reference of ostrich movement. I would also create animation for the enemy knights/buzzards that would follow more of buzzard movement but include the same mechanics (Walk/Run/Fly/Drift/Jump)
While the background will still be created to feel very 2D/flat, I would love to incorporate more of a 3d element to the characters as they turn to go the opposite direction.
    Rigs:
For the two main characters, they don't look very different aside from color in the game so I would like to use the same rigs and slightly alter the colors.
I would use this rig for the knights on both main characters and enemies and alter the colors: https://raykruk.gumroad.com/l/Styliz...nded_by=search

If I have time, I would also love to include the pterodactyl flying through the scene after one of the characters. I remember hearing the sound of it coming was always nightmare-inducing as a kid.

Points: I would propose 30 points for this project since it includes gameplay mechanics of a Walk/Run/Fly/Drift/Jump for two characters, the main characters and the enemies. It would also include creating the background elements and studying realistic bird movement for the mounts.

Things I thought I did well: I really enjoyed doing the Ostrich Animations! It was fun doing research and a kind of unique thing to get to animate.

Things I want to(plan to) improve: The vulture rig ended up being difficult to animate, the rig was mostly just joints and there was no IK/FK system for the legs. I feel like I got the general movement the way I wanted, but there's a lot I want to add in polish and follow through/overlap.
I also was not able to complete the dinosaur animation.

Things I learned: Animating birds is super fun! Vultures especially have so much personality in their walks and runs. I definitely need to consider time needed to work with rigs that might be a little more difficult for the future.
