  • Spring 2020: COVID-19 Spring Break and Online Courses

    Hello Everyone,

I hope you are enjoying a safe and productive Spring Break!

I’m sure you’ve read by now that in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, UIW (in an abundance of caution) has extended Spring Break by an extra week (through Friday, March 20th) and that after that, all classes have been moved to an online format. Details as they continue to emerge will be accessible here: https://my.uiw.edu/safety/coronavirus.html.

For us, this presents some challenges that we are trying to solve. Much of the software we use in class is free for students (Maya, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, UE4, Unity, etc...). For now, please make sure that you start acquiring these free student licenses to minimize disruption.

We also understand there are other softwares (like ZBrush) that do not offer a free student license. We are working on trying to find a solution to this before classes are set to reconvene and will let you know as soon as we know.

We are also working on the details of allowing the labs to remain open for those of you without adequate hardware/software at home who still need to use the facilities on campus. If you are able to work from home, please do. But we will try and make on-campus resources available.

Finally, we will continue to run classes via the forums (forums.uiw3d.com) and either Blackboard or Canvas (depending on your faculty’s preference). There is likely not a one-size-fits-all solution here, and each faculty will likely be utilizing a distinct and unique solution appropriate for the culture of their course. Watch for contact from each of your faculty members. Watch the forums and watch your email.

This is going to be alright. We are going to find a good solution in this tricky situation that maintains a high-level of instruction and still protects our students. We will use email and the forums to simultaneously pass on information as it becomes available.

    More details to come.

    Thanks,
