  • Spring 2025 | Alien Bust: WIP 4

    Due before class (6:00pm): (02/05/25)

A "Work in Progress" (WIP) assignment in digital sculpting refers to an intermediate stage of a sculpting project where you present your ongoing work before reaching the final completed piece.

In a WIP assignment, you are required to share your progress, demonstrate your sculpting skills, and receive feedback from your instructors or peers to refine your work further.

**This WIP should focus on polishing up your overall sculpt, refining the overall details, and getting ready for your Final turn-ins.

I focused most of my time redoing the helmet and body armor to make it look more refined. I also bolded the face wrinkles/cheekbones more, added skin to the eyelids and around the horns and tubes, added indentions to the tubes, changed the color of the horns to match my reference color more accurately, moved the lower skin closer to the body armor to make it look like it fits on the alien better, added holes to the outer ends of the tubes, and added the secondary light green color to some parts of the alien to match my colored reference.

I focused on the armor and skin detailing. More specifically adding in the damage, scars, and armor grunge. I also added in the more specific elements of the armor, which are the ropes and gold plating that connects the pieces, making it feel more unified. Finally because I had the time I added the base colors and materials to see how it renders. out. I may lighten up the shadow, because venom is already so dark, I don't want to lose any of my skin details.

I focused more on the hair and adding details to the armor, such as the straps and the stiches. There are hair strands I am doing though I turned them off for now as I feel they're not ready enough to be shown in the WIP. I spent some time coloring the extra details he has in his ref picture, such as the fur like texture in his face. I will be refining the fur texture more and adding more wear to the leather armor and his mask to have more damage to it. I haven't touched the eyebrows yet but everything will be cleaned and fixed up more.

I mostly focused on continuing to detail and polish the armor on the armor, since in the previous WIP some pieces still lacked sufficient detail and proper shape. I worked on the bottom half of the armor, detailing the chest plate underneath the main one, the straps that come off from it, and the shoulder pieces that stick upward. I did very minimal work on the helmet but I still feel as if I need to continue to work on it. Additionally, I added some basic colors, but I didn't go too far into coloring since I still want to work more on the model itself before I start painting the details.

I spent most of my time working on the color pallete and the materials of the sculpt, trying to color it in a way that could enchance the details of the sculpt. I also went in and polished a lot of the small details of the sculpt, making them sharper, contrary to how smooth they were before. Finally, I decided to spend sometime and make a base for the bust in hope to add a little bit more detail to it and make it stand out a little bit more.

I focused on the color of the alien, as well as the redefining the armor that he has. The shoulder pads have more edge to it, as well as the collar piece. It has a more upper and sharper part to it. I want to try to refine the numbers on his chest, it is not coming out how I want it to be. I still need to add detail around his torso and face. Something that I need to work on.

I spent time trying to clean up more of the armor edges and texturing the skin/fins of the alien. I would like to find a more see through material for the fins and a fleshy wet material for the rest of the face, I also started blocking out colors, I'd like to blend them a bit more and mix materials if it's possible, to add a nice sheen on the visible scales. (I had to post screenshots since my Adobe is still down)

My main focus for this deliverable was to focus on optimizing all of the hard surface elements and skin texture of my model. I also started polypainting and adding materials to get an idea of how the model will look when colored in. I also started addding weathering and damage to the armor.

I spent half of my time working on and polishing up the space goggles, I tried my best to make it not look like a piece of playdough. I refined the side spikes and added the yellow glass detail on the front. Then I added more details on the armor like the dent lines and the Orange at the bottom. Lastly, I tweaked his mouth a bit, so it doesn't look like a closed mouth and not look like its apart of his skin. The big thing that I couldn't add in time was his wood skin details and the green mossy areas. (I still couldn't figure out how to change the background color in Photoshop)

I spent around 6-7 hours again. I was mainly working on polishing up the hard surface objects, adding detail to the helmet and removing all the wiggly imperfections. I also started the color, however I'm still experimenting with the color scheme placement.

I focused more on the coloring then anything. I still need to work on the mask coloring and fur, because I want to give it more detailing. But I also decided to work a bit more on the model and I couldn't get the antennas quite right. I have a lot to do this weekend if I want this project to be completely done by next week.

I spend time coloring the Alien and its armor. I was confused on how to assign different materials on the Alien, but I saw a video on how to do that and it really helped me understand and got the job done for now. I also made the horns have lines in it to make it wooden and make the armor edges sharp.

I was focusing more on finding what colors I would like to use and how it would look on different materials. I would love to figure out how to make something glow because I would like to make some parts of the mask to glow.
