  • Fall 2024 | NERF Gun: WIP 01_Block In

    Due before class (6:00pm): (10/23/24)

A "Work in Progress" (WIP) assignment in digital sculpting refers to an intermediate stage of a sculpting project where you present your ongoing work before reaching the final completed piece.

In a WIP assignment, you are required to share your progress, demonstrate your sculpting skills, and receive feedback from your instructors or peers to refine your work further.

This WIP serves as a foundational step in the asset creation process designed to assess your ability to accurately translate 2D concept art into 3D form through what we refer to as the Block-in process.

You will focus on creating all BASE GEOMETRY and form for the NERF Gun represented in the 2D concept art while maintaining alignment with proportions, silhouette, and overall aesthetic. NERF Guns are composed of several parts, these Primary Shapes are what I am looking for.

Include your name in the post!

Answer these questions: 1. Did you take time to research and learn about ZModeler with the extra time I gave you? 2. What is something you learned about ZModeler that I have not yet covered in class or that you want me to cover more in class?

    Deliverables:
    • An Image of your 2D Concept Art Reference (.png)
    • Turnaround Renders:
      • You are uploading your compiled Photoshop renders utilizing BPR from ZBrush posted directly inline of your UIW3D Forums post. (.png)
      • Minimum Views (Front, ¾ front, Side, ¾ Back views)

Yes, I did take time to research how to use ZModeler during my extra time.
I learned how to mask polygons and use parallel when extruding edges.

I messed around with it a bit, but I wouldn't say I full on researched it. I honestly cannot remember if I learned something outside of what we covered in class. :/

I haven't been able to yet, the extra time given i was more or less trying to sort out what to do. I did find videos, however I haven't watched them yet. The notes you give us are pretty detailed so at the moment everything I have seen about ZModeler was in class. ( I do need to work on the wip more, but I'm having trouble trying to decide how to separate the different pieces at the moment)

              1. I had a difficult time with the ZModeler tool. I haven't watched enough videos to fully understand the tool.
              2. I don't remember exactly what part of the tool we covered in class besides extrude, delete, Qmesh, and I think move??
(For some reason it only shows the base and geometry of the base forms I used throughout the process. Can someone explain please?)

Yes, I used the time given to us to study about Zmodeler and put to practice some of the tools that I saw to try and see how close I could get to my usual Maya hard surface workflow with quad-drawing, while practicing there were 2 tools that stood out. Those were the split function and the slice mesh function for points. I also learned how to use masking on points, edges, and polygons to get cleaner results when moving parts of my subtools.

I did research and asked for help, but im definitely bad at Zmodeling. i hate it, but i have no choice. i learned what the different options of Zmodel mean, and an easy way to make a 3d cube into an easy, edge free cube.

Yes, I watched a couple videos on ZModeler but I don't think I was able to put as much time into it.

I didn't even touch the ZModeler, because I didn't know we had to use it. I just started with a sphere and modeled it into the base shape of the gun.
