  • HSM - 03 - Room | Lighting : 10 - 24 - 24

In this assignment, you will complete the texturing of all secondary props in your scene and ensure that your project is ready for rendering. Follow these steps to ensure a high-quality submission:
    • Texturing:
      • Ensure that all secondary props (objects in the background or that complement the main focal points) have been fully textured. Pay attention to material accuracy—each prop should look authentic and appropriate to its real-world counterpart. Use references for materials to achieve a photorealistic finish.
    • Scene File Preparation: Save your scene file as: `yourname_room_04.ma` or `.mb`. Make sure to save it in the designated scene folder within your room project. [*=1]Turn on autosave to avoid losing progress in case of system issues.
    • Render Previews - Render out both a daytime and a nighttime preview of your scene, ensuring that you:
      • Composition - Frame the scene with attention to good composition, ensuring that you have balanced coverage of the room and its assets. The viewer should clearly see the various elements within the room without the rendering feeling cluttered or too sparse.
      • Mood - Capture the correct mood for both daytime and nighttime renders. Daytime should convey the appropriate amount of natural light, while the nighttime render should focus on lowlight, atmospheric lighting. Consider the impact of shadows, color temperature, and light intensity on the overall mood.
      • Different Angles - Daytime and nighttime shots must be taken from different camera angles to showcase different perspectives of the room under different lighting conditions.
      • Realism - Ensure that all objects in your scene have appropriate materials applied. Textures should align with the real-world properties of the materials they represent (wood, metal, fabric, etc.). Take time to refine base color, roughness, and normal maps to enhance realism.
      • Camera Settings - Adjust the camera settings to suit the lighting conditions of both day and night renders. Make sure the focal length, depth of field, and exposure are set to create a cinematic look, not left at default.
      • Lighting - Lighting should be natural and convincing, reflecting the time of day.
      • For daytime, use appropriate intensity, direction, and shadows to simulate natural light sources (sunlight, windows, etc.).
      • For nighttime, consider using artificial light sources such as lamps, and balance ambient light to create depth without losing detail.
      • Reference - Provide a reference image for the type of lighting you are aiming to replicate (e.g., warm indoor lighting, soft daylight through windows). This reference will help ensure that your lighting choices align with a specific mood and context.
    • Submission Instructions
      • Render Submission - Post the rendered images of both your day and nighttime scenes.
      • Project File Submission - Save and upload your entire Room project folder (including all assets, textures, and scene files) to OneDrive. Once uploaded, share the link to the folder here for review.
      • Peer Review - Comment on two of your classmates' renders. In each comment, provide:
        • 1. One positive aspect of their work (e.g., composition, texture quality, lighting choice).
        • 2. One constructive suggestion for improvement (e.g., camera settings, material accuracy, lighting consistency).

Make sure you adhere to the deadline, as this will affect the overall grading of the assignment. Be mindful of both the technical and artistic aspects to produce the most professional-looking renders possible. Be sure to read the notes on the room project for additional information.

Here are my renders. I know they're bad, but I couldn't figure out what angles I wanted.

It looks like a real picture, almost. But the lighting is a little too harsh on the windows.

The lamp light in the nighttime looks smooth, but the left corner in the daytime is a bit too bright.

Positive: The night render looks somewhat realistic, with the background blending in amazingly.
Constructive: Detail the headboard a bit more, as it still looks a bit low-res.

Positive: The lighting looks pretty good throughout both scenes, and the textures are done pretty well.
Constructive: in the day scene, I'm noticing some light shining from the corner of the wall on the left side. May need need to check if that part is connected.

Positive: I would say that the day lighting is pretty realistic, and captures the scene well.
Constructive: I think the night lighting color needs to be adjusted, it needs to be a little less purple.
