    What are we looking at?

What do we draw? What don’t we draw?

Drawing vs painting (drawing lines vs not drawing lines) Shape vs form

Assignment due 09/08 noon CST ON THE FORUM and in this thread please

Draw this, demonstrating understanding of checking your drawing by finding the center of your drawing, and having that match the center of the reference, while also being mindful of the tendency that we have as artists to impose the default of "what we think we know" on top of "what we actually see."

      Re: "Drawing" vs "Painting"

      Here's a demo I did a while back.

This is two hours of drawing, checking against the reference using the box, and intersecting lines giving me, not just center spots, but 1/4 spots and 1/8 spots that I could make sure correspond to the same places on the reference. I didn't just use the edges like I said in class to do, but also the edges of the shadow shape that I could see on the reference, just to give myself more points of reference on my drawing (we'll talk more about that later). The thing that took the most time wasn't the mileage, because in the end, there's not a lot of lines put down, but making sure that everything was in the right place.

This is two hours of "painting", obviously still done with a pencil, but establishing form and shadows as determined by how the light falls on the face, which is what I call "painting". Again, it's not the mileage, but making sure everything is correct. You can see that I didn't change anything in terms of the drawing, all the lines are still there, in placement at least. If those lines weren't correct, it wouldn't be as successful as a finished piece.

So the thing I want you guys to understand as well is that it's a time consuming endeavor, and the time isn't because of how much you have to draw in terms of quantity, as much as making sure that every line is in the right place.

BUT, don’t feel like you have to go this far in the potato peeling. You can give me Tomb Raider gen 1, as long as every “cut” is in the right place.
