Significance: Though historically inaccurate, in Apocalypto we are introduced to a Mayan city to which the captives are taken to. In this scene, we see a town square and in the middle a great temple in which sacrifices are being held. We get the understanding that the city's foundations are crumbling and is in famine, so the people have turned to their priests to sacrifice captives in order to secure their future. Unfortunately, our protagonist is among those captives and must now try to survive.
