    Strip Club/Bar

    Style: Art Deco

    Year: 1920's - 1930's

    Game: Bioshock 1

Significance: This scene shows the type of lives the citizens of Rapture once had, before everything went to chaos. Andrew Ryan promised the citizens of Rapture a new life in his underwater city; free of constraints, freedom for everyone. All over Rapture are signs of parties, freedom, happiness, and a stress-free life. Everyday seemed like a party, hence the Art Deco design all throughout the game. From the patterns in the wallpapers, and the decorative metalwork in the walls, to the unique graphic artwork used in the posters scattered all over Rapture.

        Château de Chantilly

        Style: Renaissance

        Built: 1500's
        Rebuilt: 1880's

        Game: Battlefield 1 (Ballroom Blitz)

Significance: The Chateau de Chantilly was recreated in order to bring the full devastation of WWI to the player. While the real life town of Chantilly was occupied by the Germans, nearby towns were completely destroyed. The battles of the First World War did not happen just on barren fields and soulless deserts. They happened in the countrysides, towns, and cities of France, the Benelux, etc. Former busy streets became desolate and completely ravaged due to artillery bombardments. Even places of splendid beauty and art were not overlooked by the all encompassing chaos that was the Great War.

          Hatley Castle

          Date Built: 1908
          Movie Setting: Around 2016

          Style: Elizabethan

          Deadpool

Significance: In the movie universe of the X-men mutants are seen are as practically savages. The mansion of Xavier, in which most of the operations and training of the X-men takes place, shows that they do not consider themselves as less than the rest of humanity. The Elizabethan mansion shows that mutants more than capable to live civilized lives. The noble mansion contradicts the savage view of humanity.

            The Stanley Hotel

            Date Built: 1909
            Movie Setting: 1975

            Style: Colonial Revival

            The Shining

Significance: The building is in a remote mountain which gives off the sense of isolation. In the movie Jack takes his family to the hotel to take care of it. The sense of isolation this building gives builds up the creepiness throughout the movie.

                    Grand Budapest Hotel

                    Style: Art Nouveau

Year: movie takes place in the 1930’s

                    Movie: Grand Budapest Hotel

Significance: The movie takes place at the start of WWII. Before it is taken over by the ZZ, which can be interpreted as the SS, The Grand Budapest Hotel is seen as a safe place for minority ideologies at the time. The characters in the movie represent the main populations targeted by Nazis. Wes Anderson emphasizes on the color pink which is known as a color of self love, through out the setting of the movie, while conflicting with the evil nature of the “ZZ”.

House of Kings in Minas Tirith

                      Style: Romanesque

Movie setting: 3220 second age (middle earth)

Movie: Lord of the Rings triology

Significance: The House of Kings is the governmental seat of power for Gondor, the pillars in the House of Kings are shown in a black stone, similar to the outer walls of the city of Minas Tirith in the book, or as seen in the trilogy and book on the Tower of Orthanc. The black pillars which are of Romanesque architecture may represent an almost indestructible foundation such as the bond between characters, which is always emphasized on the story.

                        The Citadel/The Pentagon

Style: mix of Modernism and Neoclassicalism

                        Year: 1943
                        In game: 2277

                        Game: Fallout 3

Significance: The Citadel is the Brotherhood of Steel's home base in Fallout 3. After being sent from the west coast on a search mission for technological assets in the east coast, the withered down contingent of troops found that the pentagons ruins housed underground levels filled with advance technology and even a hidden weapon/tool known as Liberty Prime. With these technological assets and with control of the Pentagon, now known as the Citadel, the Brotherhood of Steel established itself as a governmental authority of good that could withstand the current tyrannical government which was composed of the remnants of the country’s original government.

                          Shiganshina District/ Wall Rose

                          Style: Tudor

                          Year: 847

Show: Attack on Titan Season 1

Significance: The Royal Capital is surrounded by 3 main walls, named Wall Sheena, Wall Rose, and Wall Maria. These walls protect the citizens of human-hungry creatures. The creator wanted to give the story a setting where the citizens had little to no advance in technology, or architecture. All throughout the show, the buildings convey a story of weakness, fear, and inferiority, giving the spectator a taste of the protagonist's emotions.

                            Game:Grand Theft Auto 4

Significance: The Grand Theft Auto Franchise has been know for implementing real life architecture in their games, and as expected, that was the case for Grand Theft Auto 4. The MetaLife building is a popular building located in Manhattan, New York, and since the creators wanted to give the Grand Theft Auto game an urban setting, the MetaLife building was implemented in the game.

                              Movie: Home Alone
Significance: The directors of home alone decided to use this house because it had a warm and menacing feeling to it. This ties in perfectly with the movie because the home is a warm and safe place for Kevin who defended the house against the robbers who had no idea of the dangers that awaited them inside the home thinking that it would be a easy score due to the family leaving for vacation (accidentally leaving Kevin behind).

                                Grand Staircase - Palais Garnier

                                Style: Beaux Arts

                                Date completed: 1875

                                Movie: Phanton of the Opera

Significance: In the movie, the Grand Staircase was commonly used a social ground and an entry way to the Paris Opera House where both guests and patrons of the arts would meet between shows and would whisper rumors of the Phantom of the Opera. However, in this scene of the movie, the magnificent show displayed for the guest gets cut short by the Phantom's first public appearance in person.
