    Is there a good program for changing 3d file formats?

    There are a few, but they all have some caveats. PolyTrans is one. Deep Hemisphere is another. But, if yoiu're working with .max files, even if you have either of these apps, you still have to have 3DS Max on that machine (although the demo version will work).

    I actually use C4D for a lot of that transfer stuff. C4D will take .lwo, .3ds, .obj, .dxf, .fbx, and a bunch of other formats. Maya will do obj and 3ds although you need to make sure you have the bonus tools installed.
