  • Why on gods green earth....

is maya freaking 2 grand for a commercial liscense and xsi is only 415 and has ten times the amount of feature sets that maya does? (from compositing to a whole slew of other features....)

XSI has the most aggressive pricing model around for sure. They are cheaper than most anything (including the modeling-only Modo). Most of the 3D apps are hovering right around $2k.

XSI has put a lot of new development dollars into their application lately; they need to do something to make a dent in Maya's strangle hold of the movies/special effect area - and making the product 1/4th the price of the others seems like it could be a pretty smart move. And now that AutoDesk owns the two leading softwares Max (games) and Maya (movies) the enemy for XSI is a clear giant beast. As always it'll be interesting to see how things play out....

Avid needs to rename thier tools and functions to be more inline with the rest of the industry. XSI is so qualitatively close to Maya that XSI should have more analogous features and functions with much more similar, if not utterly indentical, names.

This would help tremendously in picking up the program, especially for new users. That said, XSI is definitely not a good first program for the new 3D artist.

You also gotta remember that most of the features in XSI aren't available for $500. That's just the foundations package.

If you want the big package the costs are $1995 for Essentials and $6995 for Advanced. It actually lines up in price almost exactly like Maya.

That's alright. I'm kinda' stuck on C4D. I wonder what they have planned for version ten... Especially, (snicker) what chemical element they are going to name it after.

I opened C4D for the first time this past week... we got some new bodypaint software for some stuff we are working on... the bodypaint is pretty cool... all in all C4D is kinda cool for some of the things it can do. :)

Yeah, C4D is one of the most underrated packages in the industry. However, using BodyPaint with XSI or Maya with the XCHANGE plugins. Makes files flowing between the packages really seamless....
