is maya freaking 2 grand for a commercial liscense and xsi is only 415 and has ten times the amount of feature sets that maya does? (from compositing to a whole slew of other features....)

XSI has the most aggressive pricing model around for sure. They are cheaper than most anything (including the modeling-only Modo). Most of the 3D apps are hovering right around $2k.
XSI has put a lot of new development dollars into their application lately; they need to do something to make a dent in Maya's strangle hold of the movies/special effect area - and making the product 1/4th the price of the others seems like it could be a pretty smart move. And now that AutoDesk owns the two leading softwares Max (games) and Maya (movies) the enemy for XSI is a clear giant beast. As always it'll be interesting to see how things play out....

Avid needs to rename thier tools and functions to be more inline with the rest of the industry. XSI is so qualitatively close to Maya that XSI should have more analogous features and functions with much more similar, if not utterly indentical, names.
This would help tremendously in picking up the program, especially for new users. That said, XSI is definitely not a good first program for the new 3D artist.Last edited by Dashmore; April 13, 2006, 15:06.Saving the Universe one minute at a time...
