    Fall 2006/Spring 2007 Internship Opportunities




    Overview

    All interns will be required to:
    • Complete an application and interview process, as typical for all new hires;
    • Plan to meet with their assigned supervisor once per week;
    • Coordinate a fixed and mutually agreed upon work schedule;
    • Be prepared to dress in business professional attire;
    • Attend meetings, as appropriate, and as they relate to their assigned job description;
    • Participate in an exit interview at the completion of their internship.

    Interns may expect from the JCC:
    • Weekly meetings to provide direction and shared feedback;
    • To play a role in at least one JCC special event or project, in all aspects, from start to finish;
    • To gain hands-on experience in day to day business operations of a non-profit organization.
    • Access to JCC facilities and programs throughout the internship period.
    • A $1,000 stipend to be paid bi-weekly throughout the internship period with additional opportunity for supplemental income from available part-time assignments.

    The outlined tasks and job outlines included relate to a variety of different opportunities at the JCC and will be assigned to an intern based on their qualifications, interest, and experience. Interns may be assigned to a specific department as in the opportunities outlined in ECE or Sports and Fitness, or they could fill a series of roles to round out the type of experience they are best suited for. Below is a list of some of the opportunities available for the coming year.

    Additional opportunities exist within the Cultural Arts and Theatre departments as well as Children, Youth and Family Services.

    • Fall Fundraiser
    The JCC’s Fall Fundraiser is typically held the 3rd Saturday of November. It honors an individual or family within the community that has a made a significant & positive impact. Typically, attendance is 300 – 400, for a night of live entertainment, food, dancing, and silent auction. Net proceeds range from $40-60,000 annually and the event benefits scholarships, youth and senior programs at the JCC.
    Interns will be exposed to various aspects of the event planning and operations including:
    Décor;
    Food;
    Auction;
    Sponsorship;
    Ticket Sales;
    Recognition;
    Entertainment;
    Marketing;
    Layout & Setup;
    Logistics;



    • Fore! The Kids Golf Classic
    The Golf Classic is usually held the 1st Friday of May. Through the support of individual golfers and corporate sponsors the event benefits youth and Maccabi programs at the JCC. Interns will be exposed to each of the major areas within the structure of the event:
    Food;
    Auction;
    Sponsorship;
    Marketing;
    Registration;
    Logistics;



    • Online Auction
    A new and innovative concept, we have used the online auction to promote our Fall Fundraiser & Golf events and to generate additional revenue in our silent auctions. It is hosted by an outside vendor, although it links directly to our website. Staff work directly with a committee to solicit auction items and then with the outside vendor to ensure a smooth transition between the online period and the event. The online auction goes live approximately 5 weeks prior to each event.

    • Membership Survey
    Once per year the JCC conducts an online membership survey. The results and feedback from the survey are used to help us to continue improving existing programs and services. Interns will assist in the following ways:
    Building survey;
    Marketing & Communications;
    Results & Reporting;
    Feedback & Outreach;




    • Communications
    We are always looking for ways to work smarter and consistent, thorough internal and external communications are an essential element in accomplishing this goal. Interns will play a role in developing and implementing the following systems:
    Email blasts;
    Online scheduling system;
    Facility signage;
    Internal communications;
    Information kiosks;



    • Volunteer Task Force
    This initiative is set to launch a working Volunteer Corps in the Winter/Spring of 2007.
    Interns will work with each of the following components:
    Volunteer Job Descriptions;
    Marketing, outreach and recruitment;
    Volunteer Database;
    Training;
    Incentives;
    Volunteer recognition;













    Job Outline


    ECE ASSISTANT TEACHER (INTERN)

    Hours: As Assigned

    Qualification: The Assistant Teacher must have at least a high school degree or GED equivalent and meet all minimum standards as required by the Texas Department of Human Services (TDHS). An A.A. degree or a B.S. in Child Development C.D.A., is encouraged. Training in child development and early childhood is encouraged.

    Responsibilities: Must become familiar with and follow all JCC Personnel and ECE policies, minimum standards of TDHS, NAEYC Accreditation criteria and procedures and any other administrative directives.

    Participate in and document at least 20 clock hours of training in child development and early childhood education each year.

    Must have and maintain appropriate certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation of children.

    Attend and participate in all assigned staff meetings required by the director.

    Assist in special events sponsored by school.

    Treat all children with dignity and respect.

    Assist in planning and implementing the daily program.

    Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment, setting up interests centers, and preparing needed materials and supplies as requested by the lead teacher.

    Assist in meeting the needs of the individual child with concerns for his/her interests, special needs, special talents, and individual style and pace of learning.

    Assist in creation and design of teaching materials to fit program needs.

    Communicate any problems and challenges to the Director and Assistant Director.

    Establish a positive liaison with parents of children through informal conversations. (Be friendly and listen - refer any in-depth question to lead teacher).

    Supervise the classroom when the Lead Teacher is absent.

    Perform general housekeeping tasks.

    Perform all other reasonable tasks assigned by Lead Teacher and Director.


    Sports Internship



    Degree: Physical Education, Sports Administration, Recreation Management, Kinesiology

    Supervisor: Sports and Fitness Coordinator




    Responsibilities:
    • Learn aspects of supervision of the sports and fitness department
    • Organization and implementation of after school sports classes, including class instruction, scheduling, recruiting staff and participants, and developing and implementing marketing campaigns
    • Organize and plan a sports league from start to finish (planning, marketing, budgeting and administration)
    • Assist with coordination of adult, youth and teen sports leagues
    • Conduct periodic evaluations and surveys for leagues and classes
    • Other program and administrative duties assigned by supervisor

    Fall/Winter Internship:
    • Assist in the organization and implementation of adult and teen leagues, and Sports for Life Program
    • Assist in the planning and organization of the Spurs Youth Basketball League
    • Assist in development of Maccabi club sports program for teens
    Winter/Spring Internship:
    • Assist in the organization and implementation of the Spurs Youth Basketball League
    • Assist in organization and implementation of the Senior Games
    • Assist in the organization and implementation of the Youth Soccer Academy












    Fitness Internship




    Degree: Exercise Science, Kinesiology

    Supervisor: Director of Wellness and Fitness


    Responsibilities:
    • Assisting in fitness center coverage
    • Observe and evaluate exercise classes and conduct a member satisfaction survey
    • Provide instruction for exercise classes as appropriate and based on skills
    • Develop action plan to collect data from members regarding exercise history and medical information.
    • Perform health assessments of members.
    • Plan and implement an exercise program from start to finish (action plan, market, and manage)
    • Research equipment for purchase
    • Provide support for new member fitness orientation program
    • Market and promote fitness programs to existing members
    • Learn functions of and assist with the operation of member services desk
    • Assist with special events and programs
    • Perform other duties assigned by supervisor
