When i extracted the head it caused all that black stuff to appear on the right side of the character, but when i do a smoth proxy it disappears. I tried averageing normals and it took away some but not all of the black marks.
I know this problem has occured before does anyone remember how to fix it?

Select the faces on that side, go to Edit Polygons> Normals>Set to Faces,

    then go Edit Polygons> Normals> Soft/ Harden (180).

But even before you do that, try this, take the model delete that half that is messed up, or undo the mirro geometry that you did. Take the original half, Snap Center Pivot to the center of the grid(just make sure) Edit Delete History, and Modify>Freeze Transformation. Now try to mirror Geometry.

    if that doesnt work,
Freeze Transoformation at its current state, Then go to Normals Set to Faces.
It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.

Did you use Mirror Geometry, or duplicate along -X

Will's suggestions are good ones. That looks like a whole lot of non-manifold geometry....
