    And then there's the one built into Maya, which i haven't worked with a huge amount. Within Maya, just hit F1 and enter "unfold uvs" into the search....

    I've recently unwrapped a full body with the tool and I find it very useful. However, the demos are obviously built specifically to show off the power. So the tool wasn't as impressive as it looked - obviously. But used in conjunction with the worldspace based RelaxUV tool its very powerful. The method I developed during the unwrapping of the character is to use the unfold to layout the external edges or silouhette of the uv map and then use the relax to do the interior and it seems to work very well this way. A tip is to try not to do too much of the geometry at once, try unfolding sections it seems more accurate this way.
