  • Slow-moving verticies

I'm trying to model more of my fish-guy, but whenever I start moving verticies around, it gets really really sluggish, but only refreshing the movement of the vertex. It's not taxing the hard drive or anything else that I can see, but it's so slow, and on top of that, it's never done this before, not this bad anyhow.

    Any suggestions?

    I'm running:
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+ @ 2.01 GHz
    512 MB RAM
    Windows XP SP2

Have you deleted your history lately?

Also, are you running XP - 64 bit?

deleted the history, still the same

no, I'm not running 64bit windows

I'm guessing this might have something to do with my RAM, video card, which is RADEON 9550 256MB, by the way, or drivers. Although I hope it isn't, since I've recently installed a fresh copy of Windows.

Could you send it to me? I think I've seen this problem way back when and I'd like to take a look at it more closely.

Very strange. They don't move slow for me at all. I resaved it here....give this one a try and see if it's slow.

ok, I'll check it out, thanks a lot
but if it still moves slow and jerky, do you think it would be something with my videocard?

I played around with yoru file, I had no problems at all. Maybe your version of Maya could be messed up, if you havent, I'd try reinstalling. and if taht doesnt work. may be Defrag your computer.

ok, I've reinstalled Maya and I've been defragging my HD like crazy since I reinstalled WinXP, although I will try anything right now.

Maybe after I finish with this job I've been working on, I'll do another OS reinstall and make sure Maya is working well before I start on anything else
Hopefully then all my drivers will be in order.

Just thought of something... would a power supply going bad crap out performance? If that's the case, then it would fix a number of problems I think I have.

Before you do anything else to your machine, answer me this: Do you have slow moving vertices on any other file? Or is it just this one?

When I resaved it, did the resaved version work fine on your machine?

If your other files work fine, it has nothing to do with your hardware setup. Those slow moving vertices will hardly ever have anything to do with a fragmented hard drives or anything like that. The only thing that might cause that is a video card problem (old drivers, etc....).

I tried opening your resaved file, but Maya says it's has a corrupted file structure
if I remember correctly, that's what was happening back in our 3D 1 class when we took our stuff home and tried to work on it in plain Maya 6.0 instead of 6.0.1

could you check that and resave me another version?

actually, don't bother I opened some of my old stuff from class and it does the same thing with the verticies, although not as bad as before

I just think it's weird because I never had problems like this before with my setup. This is rather spontaneous

and here's something else really weird:
as a last ditch effort, I moved the Maya window over onto my non-DVI non-flat panel monitor (because i've got a dual monitor setup) and it works just fine, my verticies are back to normal speed.
is there any explanation to this?

oooook, after much confusion, I've found out this much. My computer hates my fish file. After I moved Maya onto my other monitor, my turtle file worked great, but the same cannot be said for my fish. So I'm back to asking if someone can resave my fish file for me.
