  • Lightwave v 8 Siggraph 2003

During this Siggraph conference newtek has been providing live feed of their booth at the siggraph exhibition. They've been demonstrating some very interesting new features for Lightwave. Some of the features they showed today that caught my eye, were the enhanced character tools, improved cloth and soft body simulation, and as always better particles to name a few. I thought the inclusion of point level animation in the layout was good idea considering you'll be able to fix any minor imperfections in your mesh just by moving the vertices. Unlike cinema PLA, Lightwave seems to be able to recongnise each point and allow you to modify the individual characteristics of every point while not effecting other points animation tracks. Anyways, whereas previous updates didn't include anything to really get excited about, this new version of lightwave seems to be shaping up quite nicely. Be sure to check out the newtek website to watch live stream of the newtek booth at siggraph or you could try the links below. If one doesn't work try the other.

Lightwave v8 isn't bad, but what's really good is Luxology. Luxology is basically the biggest group of the best of LW programmers who got fed up with the company and left.

The word on the floor is Luxology is written from the ground up and is everything you love about Lightwave, and nothing that you hate.

Ive heard about Luxology. They have a new modeling program coming out called modo or something. It looks very interesting.

Yep; eventually its going to be more than just a modeler - it will include everything. It will be interesting to see what that does to LW; they have now cut all ties between each other (at first the split was supposed to be a amicable and mutual split with lots of contacts remaining).....

It's intersesting though; at every demo reel session or hiring directors sessions here at SIGGRAPH - every one of them have said: "We don't care about software, we just want great animation" and then all the smaller studios say "WE care about software!!" So its a tough one to decide on.
