Align tool problem

I'm in Illustrator, CS2, and suddenly my align tool isn't working. I haven't used it in a while, so I guess it's possible I'm doing some stupid thing wrong, but I thought it was: Select objects to align. Click appropriate align.

Anyone else run into this problem?

are the objects not moving at all? or are they just not aligning like you are wanting them to align?

Perhaps you are pressing distribute instead of align?

They are definitely not moving at all. It's a series of circles in a horizontal straight line- I pulled one about an inch upward to see if anything would happen, but it didn't. I hit all the align and distribute buttons, still nada.
